Spring Fika

Hello and happy spring!

Instead of doing a journal-style post, I thought it would be fun to explore a topic that I have been fascinated by for some time. If you have been around the Unpolished Ponderings world for a little bit, you probably know how much I love the concept of hygge. Well, there is another scandinavian concept that I am intrigued by—and it is called fika!

What is Fika?

It sounds fancy and official, but basically Fika refers taking an intentional coffee break —preferably with friends, but can also be done alone. I LOVE this concept. In Sweden, it is considered a common to schedule in time for coffee, a sweet treat and good conversation with friends each day.

There is something so rejuvenating about a coffee date with a friend, right?? While Fika is no less than taking a coffee break with friends, it is more than simply that. Fika, similarly to hygge, is about slowing down and intentionally appreciating the simple pleasures in life.

You may be wondering what is so unique about taking a coffee break? Fair question. Well, what makes fika different from an ordinary coffee break is that it involves taking time to slow down. Fika is an opportunity to truly pause from hurried cares and concerns and taking time to gather your thoughts or connect with someone else through quality, uninterrupted conversations.

Like I said above, Fika is a daily ritual in Swedish culture. Even in office settings, Fika is scheduled into the days so that there is always time for a hearty coffee break.

What are the benefits?

Think about how your days would look if, even on your busiest days, you took a good hour or so out to enjoy a good cup of coffee (or tea) and a nice treat. Imagine if catching up with friends, family or coworkers over coffee was a normal part of your day? I know for me, if this was just scheduled into the day, I would feel a lot more fulfilled, recharged and inspired each day.

The reason fika and hygge appeal so much to me, and to many, is that they foster a slow, simple life where little pleasures are savored and appreciated. I am all about that—and not just because my health limits force me to slow down! I truly just believe that a beautiful life is made up of moments and simple pleasures that are savored each day. Fika is a great way to build in relationships, indulgences, time for contemplation and stillness into a daily life!

What about you?

Have you ever heard of fika before? What are your thoughts on this concept? I would love to know!
