Hygge Ideas for Surviving Winter

Hygge Ideas for Surviving Winter

Do you struggle to stay positive and motivated through the long winter months? If so, this post is my personal PepTalk for you. These five hygge ideas will give you all the inspiration you need to enjoy, rather than merely survive, winter.

Hygge Time

‘Tis the season to be hygge! In other words, it is time to combat those winter doldrums head on. Right?

Confession time: I actually LOVE winter. And when I say winter, I mean storybook winters with fluffy white snow frosting the trees and a cup of hot chocolate in my hand. I don’t know about you, but winter so far here in Eastern Pennsylvania has been pretty snowless and bleak. Which means I’ve been brainstorming ways to incorporate more hygge into these dull winter days.

For this post I want to give you five solid hygge ideas that you can incorporate into these dull winter months to make them cozy and enjoyable.

1.) Winter walks

To me, one of the hardest parts of winter is the cabin fever feeling from spending too much time cooped up indoors. My solution? A winter evening stroll! There is something so refreshing about bundling up in nippy air under a clear, starry winter sky.

Of course, a winter walk is most magical when surrounded in moonlit pearly white snow. If you happen to live in an area that gets lots of snow, even more reason to take an evening stroll!

2.) Ambience

One of the best ways to tackle winter blues head-on is to incorporate as much hygge coziness as possible. It’s true that being inside a lot can cause some claustrophobia, but there is also an opportunity to make your home or living quarters a sanctuary of warmth, relaxation and inspiration.

Some easy ways to do this are lighting a fire, turning on relaxing youtube channels for ambience, lighting candles, piling chunky knit blankets or wearing fuzzy socks or slippers. There are so many great books and blogs about the mindset and practice of hygge and ways that it makes Scandinavian culture so content during those long, dark, cold months.

3.) Hot treats

If you want to hygge and warm up at the same time, you must indulge in some warmed up eats. Preferably have a warm meal like soup or casserole with some hot tea or hot chocolate for dessert and you will be cozy in a heartbeat.

4.) Projects

Even though winter months limit your activity options somewhat, a great way to pass the winter months is to busy yourself with some sort of project or activity. I personally want to try my hand at knitting sometime this winter, but also have some other simple DIY projects up my sleeve that I’m excited about.

Some great winter project ideas are scrapbooking, bullet journaling, knitting or sewing, painting, jewelry making or making simple wintertime DIY home decor.

5.) Embrace sweater weather

Last but not least, one of the best ways to combat winter blues is to fully embrace winter fashion and sweater weather. I LOVE winter fashion because I am all about layers and outerwear. I have an impressive collection of various styled hats that add instant flair and warmth to any winter outfit. I also love wearing different styled boots, scarves and statement tights throughout the winter months because I do not get to wear them once spring and summer come along.

What about you?

What do you think of this list? If you live in a colder climate area, I would love to know your go-to list for beating the winter blues or any of your other thoughts on hygge!
