Favorite Fall Memories

Keeping the blogtober strike going strong, I thought I would share some of my favorite fall memories!

1.) Elementary school halloween parades

Did you have these in elementary school? For some reason I remember the thrill of dressing up with the entire class and marching around the school and playground being paramount. Perhaps because we got to miss some class and get extra candy…

2.) Halloween parties

Any halloween party—elementary school, high school, college, post-college….if it involves dressing up and spooky ambience, I’m a fan! But mostly for dressing up. I am always looking for an excuse to play dress-up so obviously Halloween is my cup of tea.

3.) Frolicking through the cornfields

This may be unique to where I grew up, but I LOVED frolicking through the dried fall cornfields near my childhood home. Even though it was usually annoying getting whacked with cornstalks, I usually got lost and there were tons of critters it was like being Pocahontas! Corn mazes are fun, too, but those are just so tame, right?

4.) Decorating with tacky spooky decor

Does anyone remember Oriental Trading Company? I think they are still around, but I am immediately transported to childhood days when we got to order tacky lights and Halloween-y decor and deck the house and front porch up. Cobwebs, skeletons, purple lightbulbs—the works. Fun fact: my beloved sister and I used to transform our playroom (which was on our attic floor) into a haunted attic and make my parents walk through and get the full haunted house experience. We went ALL OUT and it was pretty epic.

5.) Watching Disney Channel Halloween classics

It sure was great to be a 90’s kid. The late 90’s and Y2K period boasted some of the best Disney Channel Halloween classics. Phantom of the Megaplex, the Halloweentown. movies, need I go on?

5.) Pumpkin…everything

Having pumpkin yummies for breakfast, snack, and dessert. Oh wait, I still do that sometimes.

6.) Going apple picking and making homemade apple cider

This tradition is more recent, but I have really loved going apple picking with my family at one of the local farms. A few years ago my dad and I made homemade apple cider from pressing all the apples we picked and it was really fun! The process was a ton of work, but very rewarding and yummy.

7.) Eating ginger snap cookies

This is a really random one, but for some reason I remember my mom always having ginger snaps on the table when I would get home from school in the fall. I think that’s where my love for ginger flavor started, and to this day I love having ginger snaps (warmed) with a glass of apple cider in the fall.

8.) Passing out candy

I have absolutely adored passing out candy on my neighbor’s porch in recent Halloween’s. I live in a Victorian village and Halloween is a really special time because the houses, already old, go all out on the main street. It’s a blast dressing up and passing out candy to the younglings and seeing their costumes.

9.) Going on haunted hayrides at night

Of course I can’t leave out the haunted hayride! I enjoyed doing this every year with friends growing up. What is better than being chased by chainsaws and tractors while finding excuses to snuggle up with your crush? Oh, the days.

10.) Mischief Night

Last, but not least, I have to tap my hat off to mischief night of 2005. My neighbor and I were tee-peeing my neighbor’s house on mischief night….and the cops found us. Well, they found me, and proceeded to escort me back to my parents’ house in the cop car! That was one of the scariest moments of my childhood and the only time I’ve gotten in any legal trouble haha. But my parents’ reaction was priceless and we laugh about it to this day.
