A Victorian Dream

My mother and I recently snuck away for a few days to Cape May, NJ for a little getaway. This was my first time there and it was pretty much exactly what I expected. Gingerbread-style woodwork, increasingly impressive wrap-around porches, enchanted Victorian-style gardens, delicious restaurants, lots of history and an overall quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

My Favorite Parts

There is no shortage of charming, historical Bed and Breakfast’s in Cape May, but my mother and I stayed at The Mason Cottage. From the gourmet breakfasts to central location and stunning rooms, the experience was absolutely lovely. My favorite part was reading on the wrap-around porch and feeling the cool ocean breeze in the shade. The beach was lovely, but I don’t do as well in the hot sun as I used to.

We also ate at some incredible restaurants—my favorite being The Ebbitt Room. For anyone looking for cool ambiance, swanky surroundings and an excellent menu, the Ebbitt Room won’t disappoint. The Mad Batter was also great for breakfast and lunch options.

Scope for the Imagination

Accommodations and dining options aside, what I loved most about visiting Cape May was feeling like I was in a Victorian era period film. They have preserved so much of the original architecture to pristine conditions that being there feels like a time capsule. Each porch detail and enchanted garden were like candy for my imagination, which made the trip feel like an escape from reality in more ways than one. Like Anne of Green Gables would say, there was plenty of “scope for the imagination,” which you should know by now is quite important to me.

Sometimes all you need to really feel refreshed and reminded of the beauties of life is some time away from your daily grind where you can get some fresh air and quality food. I am so thankful for this trip and the ways it inspired and refreshed me. The overflowing photo library on my phone says it all—I truly wanted to capture and savor every moment!

For anyone looking to get away for a few days for a classy beach trip, I can’t recommend Cape May enough!
